about

The University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca (Universidad de Salamanca, USAL) is one of the oldest continuously operating universities in Europe and the oldest in the Spanish-speaking world. Founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX of León, it traces its origins to the early Scholas Salamanticae.

The university’s campus is renowned for its historical and artistic heritage. Notable landmarks include the Escuelas Mayores with its plateresque façade, the Historic General Library - home to manuscripts, incunabula, and early printed works, the Escuelas Menores courtyard, and “El Cielo de Salamanca,” a vaulted painting rich with astronomical and astrological motifs. Alongside its architecture, USAL maintains vibrant traditions, such as solemn course openings, the celebration of its patron saint Santo Tomás, and the conferment of honorary doctorates, all of which reflect its deep ceremonial culture.

Today, the University of Salamanca is a modern and diverse institution serving around 30,000 students across nine campuses located in Salamanca, Ávila, Zamora, Béjar, and Villamayor. With 26 faculties and numerous research centers, it covers a wide spectrum of disciplines including biosciences, medicine, agro-food studies, history, languages, neuroscience, and fundamental scientific research.
